Legal Issues

As a locum you will need to make sure that you are working within the law regarding tax, insurance and, if you are an overseas national, that  your emmigration status is in order. This may sound very daunting at first, but with good advice from  appropriate authorities and qualified people, this is easier than you may think.

Things to consider when you are are travelling from abroad to work in the veterinary profession in the UK is:

  • Are you eligible to work in the UK? Is your qualification recognised?
  • Are you able to stay in the UK? Do you qualify for an appropriate visa/permit?
The section on working in the UK will give you basic guidance on registering and a general overview on work visas etc.

Dont go to vast expenses only to find out you are neither eligible to work , nor able to stay in the UK! Do your homework!

Other matters to consider include:
Insurance- vital!... and of course, the inevitable, tax! Which method of paying your tax is going to be the most appropraite and beneficial.

NOTE:
The sections on tax, insurance and working in the UK,  are provided as an overview of the situation only. Information on these sections has been obtained from various sources including the Inland Revenue, the RCVS, VDS, the UK Border Agency and UK Homeoffice .It is strongly advised that you consult these and other appropriate authorities and qualified specialists such as accountants, tax officials, emmigration authorities etc, for further information.
